Tullahoma Swim Club (TSC) is a parent-governed organization to promote competitive swimming, formed over forty years ago. TSC collects dues and hires and pays coaches. Along with coaching expenses, dues are used to pay Team registration with the Southeastern Swimming (SES) local swim committee of United States Swimming (USS). TSC conforms to rules set forth by SES and USS, and TSC competes in events sanctioned by SES/USS. Dues also are used to pay for city pool time. The success of TSC is grounded in active parent involvement to operate and be affordable. The coach has the final say in all matters concerning swimmer performance and practice scheduling. TSC uses a structured teaching program to teach competitive swimming basics. A new swimmer progresses through ten levels. Each swimmer progresses at their own speed, depending on how quickly they master the required skills. After completing the progression, team practices are primarily geared to improve times by building endurance. Summer swimming normally includes participation in the Tennessee Valley Conference (TVC) summer swim league. This is a series of dual meets at Tullahoma and other cities, followed by a championship meet for a limited number of participants in mid July. Every August, the team has the annual "Jelly Bean" Picnic to recognize swimmer times improved thru the swim year. Every swimmer that has competed in the season earns one "jelly bean" (or skittle or M&M or other candy) for each time they improve in competition. The jelly bean count for each swimmer is the highlight of the picnic. The board of directors is also elected at this event. The TSC board usually meets monthly, and all members are always invited. New agenda items must be provided to the secretary or president before the meeting to ensure meetings don't run overly long. Officers are, after all, volunteers. Fund raisers help purchase equipment, and provide assorted incentives to help keep swimmer interest. The primary fund raisers for the club are several USS sanctioned swim meets each year. The fall meet will be the "Great Pumpkin" meet, to be held in October. A variety of other fund raising functions including car washes and swim-a-thons have also been used. Parent is essential to make these efforts successful. A fall Awards Banquet recognizes swimmers for accomplishments through the year. The awards banquet will be held in early fall. The highlight of the Awards Banquet is the presentation of the "Matt" trophy for excellence in younger age group swimming, the "Ferrell" trophy for excellence in older age group swimming, and "Penn" Spirit awards. Letters for team participation are also awarded. Even though your child is just a beginner, and probably wouldn't receive any awards that night, it is still a good opportunity to let your child see what can lay ahead.
